Starch is a white, granular, organic chemical that is produced by all green plants. Starch occurs in nature in many ways and it is the main ingredient and has so many uses as end users industry application support with its various bio-products. Most commercial starch is made from corn, although wheat, tapioca and potato starch are also used. Commercial starch is obtain by crushing or grinding starch – containing tuber or seeds and then mixing the pulp with water; the resulting paste is freed of its remaining impurities and then dried.

Aside from their basic nutritional uses, starches are used in brewing and as thickening agents in baked goods and confections. Starch is used in paper manufacturing to increase the strength of paper and is also used in the surface sizing of paper. Starch is used in the manufacture of corrugated paper board, paper bags and boxes, and gummed paper and tape. Large quantities of starch are also used in the textile industry as warp sizing, which imparts strength to the thread during weaving. In pharmaceutical industry, it is very useful in formulation is as a binder & filler for tablets and capsules.

Mainly there are two types of starch i.e. Native & Modified. Native starch is almost a virgin starch extracted without any chemical modification and mostly used in to the food, dairy and other industries where Modified starch is chemically modified according to the end characteristics requires and mostly used in to the chemical and other industrial products.
